MILWAUKEE, Wis. - As a part of the 2026 Division III Week from April 6-12, Alverno College Athletics will be unveiling a new Q&A each day during the week to highlight some of the student-athletes at Alverno who embody the ideals of a Division III student-athlete. Our third day features soccer freshman Cristina Contreras.




Q: Why Division III?
I chose to play Division III soccer so that I could still prioritize my education. Division III allows me to still play competitive soccer while balancing other aspects of my life.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a Division III student-athlete? 
My favorite thing about being a Division III student-athlete is being able to play the sport I love while getting my full college experience.
 
Q: What core values do you associate with being a Division III student-athlete? 
A core value I associate with being a Division III student-athlete is a strong work ethic. Division III is still a competitive level where you need to play your hardest. Success comes from pushing yourself to your limits.
 
Q: Do you find it challenging to balance athletics and academics? 
Balancing athletics and academics can be challenging at times. In order to stay balanced, it is important to prioritize time management to put aside time for both academics and athletics.
 
Q: In one word, how would you describe being a student-athlete? 
Dedicated
 
Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Division III student-athlete?
The most rewarding aspect of being a Division III student-athlete is competing at a high level and also building strong team bonds.
 
Q: What has been your favorite moment here at Alverno, either as a student or as an athlete?
My favorite moment at Alverno as an athlete so far was regaining my love for soccer, and making a friendship I know will last a lifetime.
 
Q: What does it mean to you to represent Alverno on and off the field, court, etc.?
To represent Alverno on and off the field means to have a good attitude and good sportsmanship. It also means to display respect at all times.
