MILWAUKEE, Wis. - As a part of the 2026 Division III Week from April 6-12, Alverno College Athletics will be unveiling a new Q&A each day during the week to highlight some of the student-athletes at Alverno who embody the ideals of a Division III student-athlete. Our fourth day features basketball and cross country senior
Morgan Whitten.
Q: Why Division III?
I chose Division III because I was looking for a place where my academics were valued just as much as my athletic performance.
Q: What is your favorite part about being a Division III student-athlete?Â
My favorite part about being a Division III student-athlete is the opportunities I've had to learn about the business side of athletics. I've gained experience in game day operations and planning, and I've been able to build my network by attending NCAA symposiums and conventions.
Â
Q: What core values do you associate with being a Division III student-athlete?Â
The core values I associate with being a Division III student-athlete are dedication and collaboration. It takes dedication to stay disciplined and committed to both academics and athletics, even when it's challenging. In addition, being a student-athlete is all about collaboration, working with teammates, coaches, and others to achieve shared goals, both on and off the court.
Â
Q: Do you find it challenging to balance athletics and academics?Â
If I had been asked this question during my freshman year, I would have said yes. However, I've learned that the best thing I can do is stay organized by writing out my schedule and focusing on completing my priorities. It took time to develop this habit, but now, as a senior, I find the balance much more manageable. While it can still be challenging at times, it's about finding what works best for you.
Â
Q: In one word, how would you describe being a student-athlete?Â
Adaptability
Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Division III student-athlete?
The relationships I've built. I've met so many people who have become great friends and mentors, and those connections are something I truly value.
Â
Q: What has been your favorite moment here at Alverno, either as a student or as an athlete?
My favorite moment was my freshman year when we earned our first win at Alverno. It was a basketball game against Mount Mary, and it felt incredibly rewarding to see our team come together, compete, and come out with the win.
Â
Q: What does it mean to you to represent Alverno on and off the field, court, etc.?
It means everything to me. I take a lot of pride in representing my school and its mission, especially its focus on empowering women.
