Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College scored six goals in the 2016 season opener to give first-year head coach Lisa Waltz her first collegiate coaching victory. The 6-3 Friday evening win came against the host Blue Angles in the Mount Mary University Invitational.
Jackie Vanderkolk scored a natural hat trick with goals in the eighth, 10th and 21st minutes to put the Inferno (1-0) ahead while Samantha Devcich (25') and Lidia Becerra (44') closed out the first-half scoring for the 5-0 lead. Devcich, Becca Schnell and Bri McDonald assisted on the second, fourth and fifth goals.
The Blue Angels (0-1) nearly evened the match with a trio of goals in a span of eight minutes before Annie Davison countered with the final tally in the 75th minute to retain a cushion for visiting Alverno.
The Inferno fired off 27 shots in the victory, had 11 corner kicks and limited Mount Mary to just four shots and a single corner.
The victory avenges last year's 1-0 loss in the season finale to the Blue Angels which snapped Alverno's 19-game win streak against the crosstown rivals.
The Inferno takes on Crown College (Minnesota) tomorrow morning at 11 to close out play at the tournament.
