Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE -- In the final Alverno College home doubleheader of the season, the Inferno dropped both games to visiting Benedictine University Sunday afternoon at Alverno Field.
The Eagles (30-9, 17-5 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) shut out the Inferno (20-19, 9-12 NACC) in game one, 8-0, and won game two, 7-2.
Five different Inferno battes recorded hits in the opener, but Alverno wasn't able to score, leaving seven runners stranded.
Benedictine's Holly Haberkorn (13-6) pitched five shutout innings in the victory, while Alverno's Erin Dulek (9-12) struck out six, but allowed six runs, in the loss after 4.2 innings in the circle. The senior right-hander put her conference-leading strikeout total to 131 with the six Ks.
In the nightcap, the Eagles scored six runs over the first four innings, which chased Alverno starter Olivia Schneider (10-6) after the fourth. Benedictine's Melissa Guzior (12-2) went six innings in the win.
The Inferno connected for three hits and took advantage of an Eagle error for a pair of runs in the fifth inning off the Eagles' starter.
Sarah Brumett led off the inning with a single to right field -- her second hit of the game -- and eventually came around to score when Mary Kate Sulikowski put the ball in play that was misfielded by the Benedictine second baseman.
Jillian Batty reached on a pinch-hitting appearance the next at bat and was knocked home on a Kristin Holub single to left field.
Benedictine got one back in the sixth on a solo homer for the final run of the contest.
Both games were the Inferno's 'StrikeOut Cancer' games, part of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's efforts to raise awareness as well as dollars for research that will one day beat the disease. Family members of the Inferno's players threw out ceremonial first pitches and the team raised funds by selling shirts and concessions to donate to the American Cancer Society.
