Softball Falls Just Short in Game One Thriller, Drops Doubleheader at Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Alverno College softball team wrapped up its 2026 road schedule on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Wisconsin Lutheran for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader. The Inferno fell in both contests, dropping a close game one 5-4 before a 14-0 loss in the finale.

Senior Giselle Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) led the offensive effort on the day, driving in two runs with a two-run homer in game one. Junior Alyssa Hubli (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph's Catholic Academy) had two hits in game one, while senior Hailie Eschbach (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) had a hit in each game, drove in a run, and walked once. Sophomore Bailey Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/University of Winnipeg Collegiate) pitched 10 innings across both games, including five scoreless innings on the day.

Alverno moves to 3-31 (1-21 NACC), while Wisconsin Lutheran improves to 18-22 (10-14 NACC). The Inferno will wrap up their season tomorrow, May 3, taking on Aurora in doubleheader actin.

Game One: Wisconsin Lutheran 5, Alverno 4
Alverno jumped out to an early lead and battled throughout, but Wisconsin Lutheran used timely hitting to hold on to a one-run victory.

Moreno led the offense with two hits, a home run, and two RBI, as her home run is the 20th of her career, adding to her program record total. Hubli added two hits, and Eschbach finished with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk as part of the seven-hit effort. Gardner went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs on 12 hits, keeping Alverno within each throughout the game.

The Inferno struck first in the second inning, as Hubli singled and came around to score on an RBI single from Eschbach. Junior Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) followed with a sacrifice fly to give Alverno a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin Lutheran answered with a run in the second before taking the lead with two runs in the third and adding single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 5-2 lead.

Alverno remained within striking distance after a scoreless sixth inning and made a late push in the seventh frame. After Eschbach led off the inning with a walk, Moreno delivered a one-out two-run home run to center field to cut the deficit to one. An error followed, but Alyssa Dinnauer induced a game-ending double play to give the Warriors the 5-4 victory and earn the save.

For Wisconsin Lutheran, Katelyn Ruth and Peyton Crutcher each had solo home runs, while Ruth finished the day 2-3 with two runs and two RBI. Addyson Wheeler had two doubles in a 2-4 day, while Teagan Piven earned her seventh win of the season in the circle.

Game Two: Wisconsin Lutheran 14, Alverno 0 (5 innings)
In the second game, Wisconsin Lutheran used a 14-run first inning to take control early and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Eschbach and sophomore Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) each went 1-2 for the Inferno in the loss, providing the two lone hits. Gardner provided stability in relief, tossing four innings after the opening frame and allowing just two earned runs, while sophomore Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) took the loss.

Despite the result, the Inferno defense settled in after the first inning, holding Wisconsin Lutheran scoreless over the final four innings.

Ruth hit her second homer of the day in game two, driving in five runs in a 2-3 effort, with Maritza Martinez also going 2-3, scoring two runs. After earning the save in game one, Dinnauer earned her third win of the season in game two, tossing four scoreless innings.
