Box Score MILWAUKEE -- A pair of scores in the final minutes of the game gave Alverno College a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over visiting Finlandia University Sunday afternoon at Alverno Field. The nonconference victory snapped a 10-game slide for the host squad.
"I'm very proud of the team for sure," Alverno Head Coach Richard Drake said. "We put ourselves in a hole, but we clawed out of it, we fought back. That showed a lot of determination. But it was a clear choice, the team decided to fight for the win today."
Delainey Smith scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute -- which was the Inferno's first lead of the day -- off a Mackenzie Mathies feed from the right sideline. The go-ahead score was Smith's second of the day, as she registered her first in the opening half off a Sydney Wisner assist.
Katelyn Bartlett served up a long pass down the middle of the field to inside the left of the box that Annie Davison finished to tie the game, 2-2, less than two minutes prior to Smith's game winner.
The Lions (1-10) had led, 2-1, after Alena Fiala's score in the 52nd, and remained in font before Davison's equalizer late in the game.
Alverno had a 15-7 advantage on shots and 8-2 on corker kicks in the contest.
"Even when we gave up the second goal in the second half, we kept playing with an attacking mindset. As the game went along you could tell, as least from our mindset, the tide was turning for us. We were continuing to attack, and you could tell Finlandia was getting a little tired as it went along. We kept pushing and it worked out for us to run them down and get those two goals," added Drake.
Allison Weick had a pair of saves in all 90 minutes at goal for the Inferno (2-12) to pick up her first victory in her fourth career start at the net.
With a pair of games remaining on Alverno's current five-game homestand, Benedictine University visits next for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game Wednesday at 3 p.m.
