MILWAUKEE -- The Inferno tallied its first goal of the young season, but Alverno College lost to visiting Ripon College 8-1 Sunday afternoon at Alverno Field.

The Inferno (0-3) was held scoreless in its first two contests of 2014, but sophomore Jackie Vanderkolk ended the early-season drought with a goal in the fourth minute of today's game. Samantha Devcich's long pass found Vanderkolk, who raced past the Red Hawks' (3-1) back line and fired a shot to the back of the net for the early lead.

The Red Hawks scored the equalizer just six minutes later on a shot that ricocheted off the left post, and Brandi Peltier scored one of her two goals on the day to put the visitors ahead in the game's 19th minute on a breakaway.

Although the Inferno put up a season-high five shots on goal, the Red Hawks tallied 19 including 10 in the first half.

Jenna Reed and Katelyn Bartlett split time at goal evenly for the Inferno, with Reed recording five saves and Bartlett six. Sidney Blodgett had four saves in all 90 minutes at goal for Ripon.

After a day off Monday, Alverno returns to the field for a road contest at Maranatha Baptist University on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. in Watertown.
