Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College fired off 22 shots, but was unable to find the back of the net in a 1-0 setback to visiting Blackburn College Thursday evening at Alverno Field.
The Inferno (0-4-1) had 10 of its shots on frame, but the Beavers' Nicole Kelly racked up eight saves, and the defenders added two more team saves, to keep the Inferno attack at bay.
Blackburn (5-3-0) was limited to just four shots in the game, but Allison Guerra needed just one to put the Beavers in front. Guerra scored on a free kick from just inside the right sideline in the 58th minute after an Alverno foul.
Brittany Carpenter and Hayley Serketich led the Inferno with seven shots apiece, including four on goal, while goalkeeper Kaitlyn Gallinatti recorded three saves.
Alverno returns to the field on Sunday at defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference champion Aurora University to open league play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
