Box Score 2 VERONA, Wis. -- Alverno College split a doubleheader with host Edgewood College today at Ceniti Park in a pair of one-run games. After dropping the opener 4-3 in eight innings, the Inferno took game two 6-5.
In game one the Inferno (9-22, 4-12 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning after Emily Ortner singled up the middle to plate Sam Kasprzak and Alexis Botsford.
The Eagles (15-16, 5-11 NACC) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on three straight hits, but Erin Dulek struck out the Eagles looking for the final two outs of the inning.
Kristin Holub and Bre Hart led off the sixth with consecutive hits, but the Inferno's final base runners of the game were left stranded to end the inning.
After playing an errorless seven innings, the Inferno made a pair of crucial errors in the extra frame after a leadoff base runner scored the game-winning run on a final Inferno miscue.
Ortner reached base four times going 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, while Hart added a pair of hits.
Dulek (6-13) had four strikeouts in the complete-game loss, while Edgewood's Rachel DeJongh picked up the win in 2.0 innings of relief work.
Alverno was able to overcome four game-two errors thanks to 10 hits in the nightcap.
The Inferno plated two first-inning runs on a base hit by Hart, which scored Ortner and Holub.
In the second, Ortner drove home Megan Rossi, who led off the inning with a base hit, for a 3-1 lead. The Eagles tied the game up after scoring in both the second and third innings, but Alverno tacked on two more in the fourth to stay ahead.
Ortner doubled to score Botsford, while Holub scored Ortner later in the inning on an infield-groundout.
Raquel Starke had an RBI-single in the fifth that scored Stephanie Skibba for a 6-3 lead, a run that would turn out to be the game winner after a two-run homer by the Eagles in the bottom half of the fifth cut the spread to a single run.
A one-out hit followed by an Inferno error put the potential go-ahead run on base for the Eagles in their final at bat. Dulek relieved Rossi and recorded the final two outs for her first save of the season. Rossi (3-9) picked up the win after 6.1 innings of work, while DeJongh (9-8) earned her second decision of the day with a loss in 4.0 innings pitched.
Ortner was again perfect at the plate in game two going 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Hart recorded her second multi-hit game with a pair of RBIs as well. On the day, Ortner was 7-for-7 with a pair of doubles, a triple and three RBIs.
Alverno will look to build on the victory with its final home series of the season on Monday versus Rockford University. The doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. at Alverno Field with a Senior Day ceremony taking place after game one.
