Box Score CHICAGO -- For the first time this season, Alverno College was on the losing side of the scoreboard as the Inferno lost 3-0 to host Illinois Institute of Technology this afternoon in Chicago.
The teams remained scoreless for a majority of the first half until the Scarlet Hawks' Adrianna Maron put the hosts up in the 34th minute, and then netted her second goal of the game with 30 seconds left in the half for the 2-0 lead at intermission.
The Inferno (3-1) fired off just three shots in the opening period compared to the Scarlet Hawks' eight, and although the Alverno outshot IIT in the second half, 6-4, it could not end the shutout bid.
"We played a lot better in the second half, but we needed to do more in the attack," Alverno Head Coach Brittany Nikolic said. "IIT was a lot better than the other teams we've seen this year, which is good because we need that as we prepare for conference play."
Illinois Tech (2-5) added the third and final score of the game in the 77th minute.
Brittany Carpenter and Nava Moniriarani led the Inferno with three shots apiece, while Andrea Diaz added a pair of shots on goal.
After the first road contest of the season, the Inferno returns to Alverno Field on Tuesday as it hosts Maranatha Baptist Bible College in the team's last nonconference game prior to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. Kickoff versus the Crusaders is at 4:30 p.m.
