Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College's three-game win-streak was snapped by visiting Cardinal Stritch University as the Wolves swept the host Inferno, 11-7 and 3-0, in a nonconference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Alverno Field.
After surrendering an unearned run in the top of the first, the Inferno (16-18) went ahead 2-1 on Stef Wilmore's ninth home run of the season. Wilmore's blast to left-center field plated Emily Ortner who reached on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the third Ortner doubled and scored Jamie Villalobos, which would increase the Inferno's lead to a pair of runs, however the Wolves (25-30) retook the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Alverno again answered as Sam Kasprzak singled through the left side to score Ashleigh Sagat and even the game at four runs apiece.
Olivia Wenzel gave the Wolves a three-run cushion with a three-run homer in the top of the fifth before Villalobos and Lauren Colette scored on a Wilmore base hit in the bottom of the inning. Wilmore snuck home on a passed ball to tie the game, 7-7, but the Inferno was outscored 4-0 in the final two innings.
Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision, as Wolves' reliever Tori Burke (7-12) struck out seven and picked up the victory in 2.2 innings of work, while the Inferno's Megan Rossi (4-4) also went 2.2 innings in the loss.
The nightcap would feature a pitchers' duel, but the Wolves' Maggie Tidrow (10-10) got the better of the Inferno batters as she recorded 12 Ks and allowed just three base runners in the complete-game victory. Erin Dulek (5-4) struck out five as she scattered eight hits and three runs -- two of which came in the seventh -- in the complete-game loss.
Wilmore recorded the Inferno's only hit of the ball game -- a seventh-inning single to center field -- and reached base earlier in the game after being hit by pitch. Kasprzak reached on a one-out walk in the third.
Alverno completes the 2013 season with its final Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader versus Maranatha Baptist tomorrow. First pitch is 3:30 p.m. at Alverno Field.
