Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Five different Alverno College players scored in a 5-1 lightning-filled victory over visiting Rockford University Saturday afternoon at Alverno Field.
"It's always great to have different players scoring," Alverno Head Coach Brittany Nikolic said. "It means we have options, and we're not always going to rely on just one person to get the goals for us."
Sydney Wisner (18') and Andrea Diaz (27') put the Inferno (5-4-0, 1-3-0 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) in front on a pair of scores assisted by Nava Moniriarani before lightning struck and halted play with 13 minutes, 57 seconds left in the first half.
The first assist was Moniriarani's 100th-career point, as she became just the second player in Alverno history to eclipse the century mark. After today's game, the senior midfielder sits just 20 points behind Ellie LaFond's ('10) all-time mark of 123 points.
"Nava is a huge leader and a fantastic player. It's unfortunate she's a senior, because I'd love her to play for us forever. She played really well today," commented Nikolic.
Over 90 minutes later, after the thunderstorm passed Milwaukee, play was resumed and Samantha Devcich added one more Inferno goal before halftime in the game's 43rd minute off a double pass by Ashleigh Sagat and Megan McCarthy.
The shortened halftime kept the momentum in the Inferno's favor as Moniriarani booted a free kick from just a yard inside the left sideline out of the goalkeeper's reach for her fifth tally of the season in the 49th minute.
Elizabeth Terrones tagged on Alverno's fifth goal of the game in the 67th minute from the right wing to cap off the hosts' scoring.
Rockford (0-10-0, 0-5-0 NACC) spoiled the Inferno's shutout bid with a score in the final minute by Christine Hermann.
The Inferno players donned pink jerseys and socks in recognition of Brest Cancer Awareness Month.
Alverno continues play at Alverno field with a NACC game on Tuesday versus MSOE and a nonconference tilt Wednesday against Beloit College. Both kickoffs are at 4 p.m.
