Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Marian University took the lead on an early score, and added an insurance goal in the final minute of play to defeat Alverno College, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon at Alverno Field.
Maisie Floyd put the visiting Sabres (7-7-1, 5-3-1 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) in front on a header in the 10th minute of play, which proved to be the game winner.
Although the Inferno (8-8-0, 2-7-0 NACC) was outshot 16-10, the host got plenty of scoring looks to even the game. Nava Moniriarani had the best chance in the 77th minute as her rocket of a shot from 20-plus yards out struck the bottom half of the crossbar and ricocheted back into play, where Samantha Devcich fired off another shot, which was blocked and cleared by a Sabre defender.
Andrea Diaz fired off the final shot on goal for the Inferno with 10 minutes to play, but the Sabres' goalie, Alysha Kallas, made her second save of the half to keep the visitors in front.
In the final minute, with the Inferno lines pushing forward for a game-tying score, the Sabres' Leisa Conn was found open near the Inferno goal line, and added the final goal with 53 seconds remaining.
Samantha Robinson made six saves in goal for Alverno, while Marian's tandem of goalkeepers made two apiece.
Although eliminated from NACC Tournament contention with today's loss, Alverno is currently tied for the school-wins record with eight victories, and looks to break the mark with four games left on the schedule. The Inferno hosts Dominican University on Saturday at 2 p.m. in its final NACC home contest of the season.
