Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Nava Moniriarani scored three goals and assisted another to lead Alverno College back from an early 2-0 deficit, defeating visiting University of Wisconsin-Superior, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Alverno Field.
The host Inferno tied the school record with its eighth victory of the season and is 8-7 overall with five games remaining on this season's schedule. The 2010 Inferno soccer team went 8-12 to break the previous year's mark of seven wins.
Things looked bleak for the Inferno after allowing a pair of scores by the Yellowjackets (3-13-1) in the 10th minute off a corner kick and the 12th minute from the center of the box. But Moniriarani put Alverno right back in the game with her first goal just 3 minutes later from 20 yards out on the left side.
"Today, I think it was hard bouncing back so quickly (from yesterday's game), and that's why we came out a little bit flat and gave up those early goals," Alverno Head Coach Brittany Nikolic said.
The teams traded possession for the next 20 minutes until senior defender Ashleigh Sagat netted the game-tying goal--the first of her career--off a deflected hard shot by Elizabeth Terrones just a moment prior.
The Inferno held an 11-4 advantage on shots in the first half, and came out firing in the second to duplicate the feat for the 22-8 game total.
Neysel Powell put Alverno in front in the 55th minute as Moniriarani found an open Samantha Devcich, who found an open Powel in the middle of the box for the go-ahead score.
In the 67th minute, the Yellowjackets' goalkeeper Alexandra Paige (10 saves, 5 goals against) came out on an Alverno corner kick in an attempt to clear the ball, but before the ball could hit the ground, Moniriarani booted the ball to the back of the net for her second goal.
Five minutes later the senior midfielder completed her hat trick from a deep ball assisted by Andrea Diaz.
"Nava had another great game," said Nikolic. "She has both the vision and technical ability to consistently play at such a high level."
Alverno continues the current three-game homestand returning to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Marian University on Tuesday.
