Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College swept visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering in the final doubleheader of the season for the Inferno's 16th and 17th victories of the season today at Alverno Field and set a new school record for victories in the process.
Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) belted a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Inferno a 4-3 extra-inning win in the opener, and Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) hit 4-for-4 and pitched a two-hit gem in the season finale, a 8-1 victory over the Raiders.
Game one -- which was resumed in the fourth inning after rain halted the game on Saturday -- was tied 3-3 after four innings of play and both teams went scoreless into an extra frame. In the bottom of the eighth, Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee/Pius XI) smashed a one-out double to center field to put the winning run in scoring position for Wilmore, the team's clean-up hitter.
Wilmore then hit a ball right along the left-field line to score Gulbronson in walk-off fashion. It was Wilmore's second hit of the game (her first also a double), joining Gulbronson and Lauren Colette (Antioch, Ill.) as Inferno with two-hits in the game. Gulbronson's first hit was a two-run home run to right-center field in the third inning, which gave the Inferno a 3-1 lead at the time.
Freshman Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) pitched the full eight innings for the Inferno in her 15th complete game of the season. Dulek (9-13) struck out seven and allowed three runs -- none earned -- on 10 hits. The rookie right-hander finished the season with 99 Ks, just missing out on the milestone.
Jessica Iversen (4-14) picked up the extra-inning loss as she scattered seven hits and had three strikeouts for the Raiders (6-30, 5-19 Northern Athletics Conference).
In the nightcap Villalobos took care of business on both sides of the plate. In addition to her game-high four hits (also a career high), she allowed just two hits in the complete-game victory to even out her record to 7-7 on the season. The junior southpaw pitched four innings of no-hit ball before the Raiders led off the fifth with an infield hit and followed it with a single up the middle. Villalobos then retired the Raiders in order in both the sixth and seventh innings for the win.
Sarah Altene (2-16) pitched five innings for the Raiders and allowed six runs (four earned) in the loss.
Gulbronson, Wilmore and Colette all recorded two hits in the nightcap, just as they did in the opening game. Wilmore had three RBIs and added a double while Colette and Villalobos added a pair of two-baggers each.
The big days by juniors Villalobos and Wilmore moved them to second and third on Alverno's all-time hits list. Alverno Hall of Famer Lindsey Terzis (2002-05) is the all-time leader with 132 hits followed by Villalbos in second at 128 and Wilmore in third at 127. The duo surpassed Terzis' teammate Mandie Henne (2002-05), who finished her Hall of Fame career with 125 hits.
The school record 17 wins surpassed the former mark of 16 set in 2004. The Inferno finish the season 17-21, and 10-14 in the NAC -- the first time the program has recorded double-digit victories in conference play.
