Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Alverno College dropped its final two games at the Gene Cusic College Classic this morning at the Lee County Sports Complex. The Inferno lost to Clark University (Mass.), 6-5, in 8 innings and then to Wilmington College of Ohio, 5-2.
Against Clark, Alverno took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a pair of back-to-back RBI-doubles by Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) and Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central), then added a third run on a Cougar's error in the fifth as Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) scored after a double of her own.
But the Cougars' (5-2) bats came alive in the sixth inning, as they scored four runs off two Alverno pitchers for a 5-3 lead heading into the final inning.
The Inferno took advantage of a costly error by the Cougars in the seventh as an Ashleigh Sagat (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) single to center field with two outs scored a pair of runs to tie the game and reliever Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) retired Clark's batters in order to send the game into extra innings.
The International Tie-Breaking Rule (runner placed on second base) was used to begin the extra frame and a pair of consecutive bunts allowed the Inferno to load the bases with no outs, but the Cougars' reliever took down the next three batters and the Inferno left the inning without a score.
The Cougars bunted over their runner and then sent her home on the next at bat with a walk-off single to center field to end the contest, 6-5.
Villalobos led the Inferno with a 3-for-3 game at the plate, while Dulek picked up the pitcher's decision as she gave up just one hit and one unearned run in 1.1 innings pitched.
In game two the Inferno allowed the Quakers (5-3) to take an early 5-0 lead after just two innings off of a pair of Inferno errors.
Wilmore doubled in the third inning to score a pair of runs, but the Inferno didn't manage a hit the remainder of the game, a 5-2 final.
Dulek (1-5) started the game and picked up the loss, but just two of the runs she gave up were earned.
Alverno finished the spring trip with a 3-5 record, though it outscored its opponents 44-40 during the eight games.
The Inferno returns to action on Friday, Mar. 23, with the 2012 home opener versus Mount Mary College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Alverno Field.
