Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE -- Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) was one of four Inferno players to hit a home run in a doubleheader sweep of Edgewood College Saturday afternoon, and became the Alverno College all-time leader in the process. The Inferno defeated the Eagles, 5-2, with a come-from-behind victory in game one and completed the sweep with a 4-1 win in the nightcap at Alverno Field.
Wilmore's home run in game two was her third of the season, and eighth of her career which surpassed Alverno hall of famer Lindsey Haese's (Terzis) career mark of seven.
"I've tried really hard this year to not be too anxious and swing earlier that I should," said Wilmore, the junior catcher. "Today it was the momentum of everyone hitting the ball so well, that I slowed down my pace a little and saw the ball well."
In the opening game Alverno (5-7, 2-2 Northern Athletics Conference) took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on four-straight hits, capped off by Chelsea Gulbronson's (Milwaukee/Pius XI) RBI-single up the middle which scored Ashleigh Sagat (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower).
Two scoreless innings would pass before the Eagles' Jessica Spitzer led off the fourth inning with a home run, and an errant throw led to another Eagle run for the 2-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning rookie Kim Gemmel (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) put the Inferno back in front with her first-career home run, a two-RBI blast to left field.
A pair of sacrifice flies in the fifth by Gulbronson and Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) gave the hosts a three-run cushion.
Freshman right-hander Erin Dulek (Rosholt, Wis.) recorded her second win of the season (2-6) as she scattered five hits and fanned five batters in the full seven innings pitched. She threw 90 pitches in the game, and 73 of them found the strike zone.
In game two the Inferno again took a 1-0 lead after Lauren Colette's (Antioch, Ill.) lead-off single in the bottom of the third came around to score on a RBI-single by Sagat.
The Eagles (7-9, 0-2 NAC) quickly answered in similar fashion in the next inning as a lead-off hit scored to tie the game 1-1.
History was made in the fifth inning when Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park), Sagat and Wilmore hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to regain the lead and chase Edgewood's starting pitcher Brittany Andrews from the circle. It was the first time in Alverno history that a team hit three-consecutive home runs, and also is the most hit in a game.
Hart hit her first-career long ball, followed by Sagat's third of the season (sixth career), before Wilmore hit her school-record homer.
Rookie right-hander Megan Rossi (Hammond, Ind./Morton) picked up her first victory in the circle by allowing just the one run in five and two-thirds innings, while Dulek secured her first save with the final one and one-third innings pitched.
Sagat, a sophomore outfielder, finished the day a perfect 5-for-5 in the batter's box and leads the team with a .462 average and 12 RBIs on the season.
Alverno returns to action with another home doubleheader tomorrow versus NAC foe Marian University. First pitch is scheduled for noon, with a live webcast available on athletics.alverno.edu.
