Alverno falls in overtime to NCU

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno took an early 2-0 lead over North Central (Minn.) today at Alverno Field, but the visiting Rams took advantage of the Inferno playing a woman down the final 60 minutes of the nonconference game for the 3-2 overtime victory.

Inferno senior Kelly Sunstrom (Muskego, Wis./Martin Luther) followed up her own missed shot with a back-of-the-netter for her first score of the season at 13:09 for the first score of the game.

Rookie Bryanna Gayle (Milwaukee/Riverside) scored just two-and-one-half minutes later for her seventh goal of the season, which gave the Inferno (1-4 overall) a 2-0 lead. But the game, which saw 12 combined first-half fouls, started to get physical from there.

Gayle was issued a yellow card at 38:43, and then less than 2 minutes later, North Central's Bethany Burkman was carded for rough play. During the caution, the official gave Gayle her second card, and was removed from the game, thus forcing the Inferno to play with just 10 players the remainder of the game.

The Rams (2-1) took advantage of the 11-10 matchup, scoring their first goal in the second minute of the half. Continuing to control the ball, they tied things up 2-2 with their second score at 67:03, and the teams remained tied the rest of regulation.

In overtime, the Inferno's Nava Moniriarani (Oak Creek, Wis.) almost gave the home team a win, but her shot--just 30 seconds into the period--was stopped by the Rams' goalkeeper, to force continuation of play.

The Rams then attempted four shots in the extra period, and connected on their fourth with 1:15 left for the sudden victory.

Alverno gets back in to conference play next week, facing Benedictine in Lisle, Ill., on Wednesday.
