Inferno blasts open season with 10 goals

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- It took the Alverno College Inferno nearly 29 minutes to score their first goal of the 2011 season, but opened the floodgates adding nine more scores for the 10-1 nonconference victory over visiting Mt. Mary College Thursday evening.

Sophomore standout Nava Moniriarani (Oak Creek, Wis.) got the Inferno on the board with the game's first goal at the 28:54 mark, and then added her second goal nearly 10 minutes later to put the Inferno up 3-1.

Rachel Krueger (Port Washington, Wis.) scored her first goal less than 2 minutes after Moniriarani's first on a pass by Kelly Sunstrom (Muskego, Wis./Martin Luther), before the visiting Blue Angels got on the board on a goal by Ayesha Abdullah.

Freshman Brittany Carpenter (Winneconne, Wis./Neenah) added another score for the Inferno to put the home team up 4-1 at intermission.

Alverno added six more goals in the second period as Krueger and rookie Bryanna Gayle (Milwaukee/Riverside) scored or assisted all the scores in the half.

Gayle netted the first goal of the period just 32 seconds into play, and added two more over the next 3 minutes for her first-career hat trick. Krueger assisted her third score, and then Gayle returned the favor for Krueger's second score of the game to put the Inferno up 8-1.

Gayle the added a pair of goals -- the final assisted by Krueger -- to tie the Alverno single-game school record with five goals and 11 points.

"It's a good start to the season," Alverno head coach Brittany Nikolic said. "It's nice to get some scoring from new faces and production from the returners as well."

The Inferno defense gave up just the one goal and allowed the Blue Angels to get off just three shots the entire game.

The Inferno continue nonconference play this Saturday at UW-Superior. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
