Box Score 2 RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Alverno College rookie right-hander Emily Snell (Denmark, Wis.) tossed 6 innings of shut-out ball against host Concordia University Chicago and picked up her first career victory in a 3-2 game one result. Her shut-out bid ended after a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Snell (1-1) was relieved with one out in the seventh with runners in first and second base by Stephanie Klees (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton). Though she allowed the inherited runners to score, Klees got out of a bases-loaded jam and picked up the save. It was the first save for an Inferno pitcher since Jessica Goetz --currently an assistant coach with the Inferno -- got the first save in program history on April 28, 2008.
The Inferno scored all three of their runs in the third, chasing the Cougars' ace after just 2 2/3 innings. Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) picked up one of her two hits to lead off the inning and scored after Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) followed it up with a base-hit RBI and Andrea Derrick (Greenfield, Wis.) sent the third run home with a bases-loaded walk.
In game two the Inferno (4-8, 1-1 Northern Athletics Conference) managed only one hit through the first 6 innings in a 7-4 loss. Left-hander Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill.) picked up the decision for the Inferno, allowing four runs (two earned) in 3 1/3 innings pitched to host Concordia (2-9, 1-3 NAC).
Offensively Villalobos had the team's only hit through the first 6 innings, a single to left field in the fifth.
Wilmore connected for her first home run of the season, a three-run shot down the left field line, but Alverno's comeback in the seventh fell short.
Alverno continues its road trip tomorrow in a NAC doubleheader at Aurora University. First pitch is set for noon at Stuart Sports Complex in Aurora, Ill.
