Alverno's comeback bid falls short

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- Rockford handed Alverno its fifth straight loss tonight, as the host Regents defeated the Inferno 3-1 in the Seaver Center.

Trailing 2-0 after the first two sets (25-16, 25-21), the Inferno came back to win the third set, 25-15, but the host Regents held on in the fourth and final set, 25-14, for the match victory.

Alverno dropped to 3-17 overall, 0-5 in conference play, while the Regents improved to 4-7, 3-2 NAC.

The Inferno nearly matched their opponents' offensive attack with 39 kills at a .207 percent clip, as the Regents tallied 40 at .216, but Alverno had 17 receiving errors in the match and just six service aces.

Linda Vang (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) had a team-high 10 kills for Alverno, while Morgan Stuckey (Duncanville, Texas) and Shelby Metzger (Montreal, Mo./Camdenton) added seven apiece.

Reagan Owen (Salina, Kan./Central) led the defense with nine digs, while Stuckey and Metzger added eight, and Chelsea Gulbronson (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) had a match-high four blocks (1 solo, 3 assisted) and added six digs.

The Inferno return home on Tuesday, hosting Marian in a NAC match at 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
