Box Score MINNEAPOLIS -- Alverno College defeated host North Central University (Minn.) 2-1 in double-overtime Friday evening at Coon Rapids Field in Minneapolis, improving to 2-0 on the season.
In the second overtime freshman midfielder Nava Moniriarani (Oak Creek, Wis.) attempted a free kick from 35 yards out on the left side, which was deflected by North Central's goalkeeper, but Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) connected with the loose ball and stuck it in the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
"Nava struck the ball really hard and on target," Alverno head coach Brittany Nikolic said. "The goalkeeper made the save but couldn't handle the ball, and after a tussle for the ball, Kelsey smacked it in to the back of the net."
Moniriarani scored the Inferno's first goal just two minutes into the game on a rip to the far post. She had numerous good shots in the first half as the Inferno took advantage of the wind direction in the half.
"The wind played a big factor in the game. Whoever was with the wind had a huge advantage. In the first half we had little bit more of run of play."
North Central (0-1) scored their lone goal on a free kick after obstruction was called on Alverno.
"In the second half [North Central] really had some good chances with the wind, but our defense played really well."
Samantha Robinson (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) recorded the win in goal, as she played the entire game at the net.
The Inferno are next in action on Tuesday as they host Lake Forest College at 5 p.m. at Alverno Field.
