Box Score LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles defeated the visiting Alverno College Inferno 6-1 in the teams' first-ever meeting tonight at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.
"We played very hard tonight and I am proud of our effort," Alverno head coach Brittany Nikolic said.
The host Eagles (4-2) led 2-0 at the half, but did not allow the Inferno (3-3) a shot in the opening-period. UWL's first goal of the game came on an Inferno own goal, as it was deflected off an Alverno defender past freshman goalkeeper Samantha Robinson (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper).
The Inferno defense then held strong for most of the first half, allowing only one additional goal off of 33 Eagle shots in the half.
UWL went up 3-0 after 15 minutes in the second half, but the Inferno would answer back in the 70th minute as freshman Nava Moniriarani (Oak Creek, Wis.) would find the back of the net off of Kelsey Kochanowski's (Oak Creek, Wis.) missed shot that ricocheted off UWL's goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.
The Inferno defense would tire in the final 20 minutes of the game, however, as the Eagles would add three more scores for the 6-1 final.
"We just ran out of legs at the end," Nikolic said.
Robinson (1-3) would record a career-high 32 saves, just five behind the Alverno single-game record of 37 set in 2006.
Alverno returns to action on Tuesday in a Northern Athletics Conference game versus Concordia University Chicago. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. at Alverno Field in Milwaukee.
