Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Sophomore forward Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) tallied five goals and an assist as Alverno College cruised to a 6-0 victory over visiting Mt. Mary College this afternoon at Alverno Field. Kochanowski's 11 points set a new single-game school record, held previously by the program's all-time leading scorer, Ellie LaFond, who had 10 points on two occasions in her career.
"Ellie LaFond graduated after last season and she was our all-time leading scorer," Alverno head coach Brittany Nikolic said, "Someone has to pick up some of those goals, and obviously, so far Kelsey is ready to do that. It was a great start to see her take it on her shoulders and go after it."
Starting off the 2010 season with a bang, Kochanowski scored five-straight goals in the game--which ties the single-game record LaFond set in 2008. She put the Inferno (1-0) on the board early, finding the back of the net in less than eight minutes on an unassisted score.
Her next three goals were assisted by freshman midfielder Nava Moniriarani (Oak Creek, Wis.), who tied the single-game assist record with the three passes. LaFond set the record last season in a game versus Rockford College.
Alverno dominated ball control and out shot Mt. Mary (0-1) 34-6, and 6-0 on corner kicks. Two of the corner kicks led to the former Oak Creek High School teammates' connections for scores.
Midway through the second half Kochanowski scored her fifth and final goal of the game on a breakaway at the 72-minute mark.
Freshman midfielder Kelly Rooney (New Berlin, Wis./West),who was cautioned with a yellow card at 70:57, scored the sixth goal for the Inferno at the 86-minute mark on a pass from Kochanowski.
Rookie goalkeepers Jackie Clore (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Samantha Robinson (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) split time in goal, and recorded one and four saves, respectively. Clore, who started the game, picks up the early season win as goalie of record.
The win extends the Inferno's streak in the series between the crosstown rivals to nine-consecutive victories and eight-straight shutouts.
Alverno is next in action this Friday in Minneapolis as it takes on host North Central University in a nonconference match at 5 p.m. The next home game for the Inferno is this Tuesday, Sept. 7, versus Lake Forest College at 5 p.m.
