Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College connected for at least 10 hits in each game of a doubleheader sweep of visiting Rockford College this afternoon at Alverno Field. The games, originally scheduled to be played in Rockford, were moved to Milwaukee due to field conditions at the Regents home field from overnight and morning rains.
"They team came out ready to play today," Alverno head coach Kristin Kosobucki said. "We had solid defense and really started hitting strong. We weren't happy with the end results yesterday and wanted to get these two wins today."
The Inferno (12-22, 6-12 Northern Athletics Conference) powered 11 hits in game one for the 10-1 victory, which was highlighted with a grand slam by Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park). It was the junior shortstop's first grand slam and second career homer. Burgess would bat 2-for-4 in the game with six RBIs.
Senior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) had an RBI with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate to go along with two runs scored, while freshman third baseman Natalie Petrie (Franklin, Wis.) hit 3-for-4 including a double and a pair of runs.
In game two the Inferno smashed 10 hits, eight in the first two innings, for the 6-1 victory. Eight of the nine players would connect for a hit in the night cap.
After scoring two in the first inning, the Inferno would tack on four more in the second.
Junior left fielder Andrea Derrick (Greenfield, Wis.) scored with the bases loaded on an errant throw by the Regents (6-21, 7-10 NAC). On the next play freshman second baseman Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) connected for a three-run home run to left field. It was Kresmer's first career homer.
From there it was all defense for Alverno, led by Goetz's arm in the pitching circle. The right-hander recorded seven strikeouts in the game, and 11 on the day, to snag both decisions, adding a pair of wins to her season record (12-19).
The 12 victories sets a new single-season school record, previously held by Victoria Billerbeck at 10 wins in 2005.
"Having the commitment from every player on the team makes a huge difference," Goetz said about the record. "As well as the training and work the team does off the field--being in the weight room lifting as a team on a regular basis--makes a big difference too."
This is the second-straight day Goetz has set a school record, as she broke her own season strikeout record yesterday. Her total is now at 197 for this season with six regular season games to play.
Along with Kresmer who was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs in game two, Goetz got her second multiple-hit game of the day with a 2-for-3 performance.
The Inferno are next in action on Wednesday at they travel to take on host Lakeland College at 3 p.m. in a NAC doubleheader.
