Goetz's season-high 15 Ks not enough as Inferno bats struggle

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

APPLETON, Wis. -- Alverno College managed only two hits and five base-runners as they were swept in a nonconference doubleheader by host Lawrence University at Whiting Field this afternoon by scores of 1-0 and 10-0.

In the opening game of the twin bill senior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther) threw for a season-high 15 strikeouts in six-and-two-thirds innings of work. She got herself out of multiple jams in the game, including in the first inning when the host Vikings (8-3) had the bases loaded with only one out. Goetz then struck-out the next two batters for the final two outs of the inning.

Throughout the game Goetz stranded six Viking runners. Her lone miscue came in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs on a 1-2 count when Lawrence catcher Dani Cherry (Crivitz, Wis.) hit a walk-off home run to right center field, ending the pitchers' duel.

The Inferno (5-9) had only two hits in the game as junior outfielder Jenna Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitnall) broke-up the Vikings' no-hit attempt with a base-hit to centerfield with two outs in the top of the sixth and Goetz connected for a double to left-centerfield in the seventh.

Three other Inferno players reached base, but all were left stranded as Alverno was unable to knock in a score.

"We put the runners in position to score," Alverno head coach Kristin Kosobucki said. "But struggled, again, to send them home. We need to be more productive on offense and reward Jess's great pitching performance with a victory."

The Vikings carried the momentum from the end of game one into game two scoring six runs in the first three innings off of Goetz (5-6) who threw for two-and-two-thirds innings to begin the game.

Freshman lefthander Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill./Community) came in to relieve Goetz throwing one-and-one-third innings and giving up four runs as the Vikings extended their lead to 10-0.

The Inferno were unable to counter as freshman pitcher Shannon Murray (Lawrenceville, Ga.) threw her first career no-hitter for the Vikings, ending the game after five innings on the eight-run rule.

Alverno has moved up its Northern Athletics Conference opener against Concordia University Chicago--originally scheduled for Saturday--to tomorrow morning. The game date was changed due to the expected thunderstorms throughout the day on Saturday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at Alverno Field.
