CHICAGO -- After combining for 30 hits in their doubleheader just two days ago, the Alverno College softball team managed just 10 hits in tonight's nonconference doubleheader at North Park University's Holmgren Complex.

The host Vikings (10-2) exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning of game one for the 8-0 lead, which was the final result in five innings.

After retiring the first three batters in the first inning, freshman pitcher Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill./ Community) was unable to silence North Park bats in the second inning, giving up eight runs on six hits in the start, picking up the loss.

Senior Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther) relieved Villalobos with two outs in the second, and gave up only one hit and two walks the remainder of the game.

Unfortunately the Inferno (5-7) offense was quiet, as shortstop Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) and Andrea Derrick (Greenfield, Wis.) accounted for the team's only hits of the game. Catcher Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) was the only other Inferno player to reach base on walk in the fourth inning.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader the Inferno again fell behind early, giving up three runs in the first inning. This time a costly error caused two of the runs to be unearned for Goetz (5-4) who received the start.

After four innings the host Vikings extended their lead to 7-0 and the Inferno managed only one hit. But in the fifth inning the Vikings would be the team with the costly errors and the Inferno would score for the first time as Burgess doubled to center field knocking home two runs and cutting the lead to 7-2.

The Vikings would get the two runs back in the bottom of the inning--one scoring on an error.

The Inferno would again threaten in the sixth inning as Wilmore would have a leadoff double and Goetz would try to help her cause with an infield single. Yet the next three Alverno batters would be retired for a scoreless inning, leaving two runners on base.

Down 9-2 in the ninth the Inferno needed a rally and got one scoring five runs, but it wasn't enough as North Park came away with the 9-7 final.

In the seventh, a walk and a North Park error began the Inferno scoring run. Burgess and second baseman Roxanne Kresmer (South Milwaukee, Wis.) would connect for back-to-back hits, sending home three runs before sophomore right fielder Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) would smash a double to center field for the Inferno's final two runs of the night.

"The errors really hurt is early in the second game," Alverno head coach Kristin Kosobucki said. "We did a good job coming up with hits later in the game, but by then it was too late."

Alverno outhit the Vikings 8-6 in game two, but left eight scorers on base in the game and committed two costly errors.

Alverno is next in action on Thursday, Apr. 1, as they travel to Appleton, Wis., to play host Lawrence University in a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is schedule for 3 p.m.
