Alverno sweeps Mount Mary to remain perfect in series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College softball team found 13 to be their lucky number today, scoring 13 runs in each game of a doubleheader sweep over Mount Mary College in a pair of nonconference games at Alverno Field.

The Inferno, which now lead the all-time series over their crosstown rival 14-0, took the first game with a score of 13-2 and then were victorious in the nightcap, 13-5, to improve their season record to 5-5. The visiting Blue Angels fall to 1-11 this season.

Alverno exploded for 30 hits in the two games which included 11 extra-base hits and three home runs.

"We're doing a great job hitting this season and it continued into today," Alverno head coach Kristin Kosobucki said. "Today we were able to score some runs."

Freshman third baseman Natalie Petrie (Franklin, Wis.) led the Inferno at the plate today going a perfect 4-for-4 in game one with a double and a grand slam--her first career home run. In game two she hit only 1-for-4, but her lone hit in the game was another shot over the centerfield fence for her second home run of the day.

"I guess all the weightlifting and running that Coach makes us do during the week paid off," Petrie said. "I put the ball in play whenever I can. When I step up to the plate I look for holes, but if it gets there is gets there, I guess."

Petrie tallied 10 RBIs and four runs on the day. Her seven RBIs in game one set a new single-game record at Alverno, previously set at six multiple times.

Defensively the Inferno showed some room for improvement, committing five errors in game two, accounting for four unearned runs.

"We had a couple of mental errors today that we'll need to fix and adjust some things defensively," Kosobucki said.

Senior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther), who picked up the complete game victory in game one with seven strikeouts and two earned runs, came in to relieve rookie southpaw Jamie Villalobos (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) in the first inning of game two after the Inferno fell behind 3-1 with no outs.

With two inherited runners, two more unearned runs would score for Mount Mary on a pair of errors taking the early 5-1 lead, but Goetz (5-3) would fan six batters in her six innings in relief work, silencing the Blue Angel bats and allowing the Inferno to come from behind for the victory.

The Inferno would add three runs over the next three innings to cut the lead to one at 5-4 as Goetz connected for her third career home run in the third inning scoring two. Goetz would hit 5-for-8 on the day for six runs and three RBIs.

In the fifth inning Alverno would explode for six runs on four hits to take back the lead at 10-5. Petrie started off the scoring with her three-run shot to center, before six more Inferno would reach base and three would cross home plate.

The Inferno would add three runs on three hits in the sixth putting the team up eight to kick in the eight-run mercy rule. In game one the rule was also triggered in just the minimum five innings of play.

Freshman centerfielder Bre Hart (Racine, Wis./Park) would hit 5-for-9 on the day from the leadoff spot in the order, scoring three runs and hitting her first two doubles of the season.

Junior shortstop Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) and freshman catcher Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) would each hit 4-for-8 on the day, combining for six runs and four RBIs.

The Inferno are next in action this Friday as they travel to Chicago to take on North Park University in a nonconference twinbill.
