KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A late seventh inning rally gave the Alverno College softball team a 4-3 victory over state rival Beloit College tonight at the Rebel Spring Games at Osceola Country Softball Complex outside of Orlando.

The Inferno fell to Widener University 13-3 in six innings earlier in the day.

Trailing 3-2 to Beloit in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Inferno (3-3) needed a rally and they got it. Freshman catcher Stef Wilmore (Elkhart, Ind./Central) began the rally smashing a lead-off double to left field on an 0-2 count providing a spark for the Inferno.

Third baseman Natalie Petrie (Franklin, Wis.) then advanced Wilmore, the tying run, to third on a fielder's choice to the right side of the infield.

Pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther) hit a infield popup to second base, that was dropped by the Buccaneers (0-4) and reached on the error and proceed to second base, but Wilmore was unable to advance on the play.

Left fielder Andrea Derrick (Greenfield, Wis.) came up to the plate and connected on a 1-0 pitch to the shortstop that would score Wilmore and send Goetz to third, but record the Inferno's second out of the inning.

Junior right fielder Jenna Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitnall) connected on a 2-2 pitch, but popped the ball up in the infield, looking like extra innings for the two Wisconsin teams. But the ball fell to the ground between the shortstop and the pitcher as Goetz crossed the plate for the 4-3 victory.

"My main thought was to just have Jess score," Alverno head coach Kristin Kosobucki said about the final play. "When I saw it drop, I knew she would make it home and Jenna would beat out the throw. It was a clutch hit."

It was Palmer's first hit of the season, but it couldn't have come at a better time for the Inferno.

Goetz (3-2) picked up the win in the game, recording eight strikeouts in three-and-two-thirds innings of relief work, but was credited with the early loss against Widener (2-2) where she gave up eight runs and seven hits in just one-and-two-thirds innings.

Alverno managed seven hits versus Widener, and six against Beloit, but left six and 10 runners on base, respectively, in the two games.

"We need to string our hits together and get that key hit when we have runners on base," Kosobucki said. "We can't leave 16 runners on base in a day. That's not going to be okay once the conference season starts."

Goetz led the Inferno in hitting versus Widener with a 2-of-3 performance at the plate scoring two runs, while Petrie also recorded a pair of hits in a 2-for-2 performance.

Wilmore had half of Alverno's hits against Beloit going 3-of-4 with two doubles, bringing her season total to six doubles in six games.

The Inferno finish out their spring trip tomorrow at the Rebel Games taking on Indiana Wesleyan University at 9 a.m. Eastern time before a rematch with Beloit at 1 p.m.
