Box Score MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College set record after record in an 8-2 triumph over visiting Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Conference game today at Alverno Field in Milwaukee.
The Inferno improved to 8-11 overall and 3-8 in the NAC--breaking school records for victories (overall and conference) which they set last season in head coach Brittany Nikolic's debut at the helm. Nikolic already has the most coaching victories all-time at Alverno with 15 total wins in just her second season.
"It's very exciting and I'm very happy for the players," Nikolic said. "They've worked hard this season to earn the wins and a lot of them came with a fight. We had to battle, even today. Though the score at the end looked comfortable, I never felt completely comfortable in the game. Concordia has some dangerous players, so we had to keep fighting to put the game away. To set the new record at home was a lot of fun."
The Inferno led the visiting Cougars (1-13-1, 1-9-1 NAC) at halftime by a score of 3-0, but a quick goal by the Cougars just minutes into the second period cut into the Inferno's lead.
Alverno would answer back as freshman Kelly Rooney (New Berlin, Wis./West) netted one of her two goals on the day for the 4-1 lead at 55:56. But CUC would make it 4-2 on a goal nearly 10 minutes later.
Then the flood gates opened as the Inferno rattled off four-straight goals in the last 15 minutes to put the game out of the visitors' reach.
Alverno freshman midfielder Nava Moniriarani (Oak Creek, Wis.) scored the first goal of the game at the 17:58 mark, but more importantly she served up five assists in the game to become just the fourth player in conference history to do so, tying the NAC single-game record and breaking the Alverno record.
With 11 assists to her credit entering today's game Moniriarani needed just two to tie Ellie LaFond for the school's all-time record, and just three to tie the NAC single-season record. She surpassed both records, and already at 16 assists in her rookie season she has become one of the top playmakers in the conference.
"I didn't expect this as a freshman," Moniriarani said. "I was just really excited to be playing as a freshman. I thought it was going to be really hard to be playing with a well built team, but [that hasn't been the case]."
Sophomore Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) also added a few more lines to the record books with her four goals and career-high three assists in the winning effort. Her 11 points tied her single-game school record she set on opening day this season, and she also surpassed her former teammate Alex Brenner to jump to third in the Alverno record book now with 80 career points and 33 career goals.
Kochanowski, who recorded her fifth career hat-trick, also tied LaFond's single-season mark of 19 goals, which was set in 2009.
"I'm excited but I miss playing with Ellie a lot," Kochanowski said. "I have so much help from Nava. She feeds me the ball, her assists will show it. But it's a team effort and I just love having the team behind me."
Sophomore defender Marissa Christjohn (Milwaukee/Thomas More) scored her first career goal in the 81st minute of the game, setup by Moniriarani and Kochanowski.
Rookie goalkeeper Samantha Robinson (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) recorded four saves, and also added her name to the Inferno record book with her sixth career win at goal which tied Jackie Barnes all-time record.
The Inferno will see if they can add to some of the records in their final game of the season on Wednesday, at Dominican University. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
"It's looking really good for the future," Nikolic said. "To keep building on what we've done, I think the progress over the course of the season with some of the new players we've added has been amazing."
