Second-half scores lead Alverno to victory

Box Score

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Alverno College soccer team broke a scoreless tie just 3 minutes into the second half and added another goal later in the period to come away with a 2-0 road victory over Rockford College today at Sam Greenly Field in Rockford, Ill.

The opening goal came off a corner kick as freshman Nava Moniriarani (Oak Creek, Wis.) served up the ball to junior defender Kelly Sunstrom (Muskego, Wis./Martin Luther) who headed it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

"With the injury from our last game we moved some people around again," Alverno head coach Brittany Nikolic. "Kelly brought some new energy up to the front."

Later in the period off a free kick, Moniriarani set up sophomore Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) who also headed the ball past the Regents' goalkeeper for the score. It was Kochanowski's 25th career goal in just her 33rd game. The two assists mark Moniriarani's second multi-assist game of the season.

"We did a good job and took advantage of our sets and corners."

The Inferno (6-8, 2-5 Northern Athletics Conference) had a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks and outshot the Regents (0-11-3, 0-9) 14-3, including 9-1 in the second half.

Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Robinson (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) notched her first career shutout, recording a single save in the game.

The Inferno take the field again on Saturday as they host Lakeland College in a NAC game. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Alverno Field in Milwaukee.
