First-half lead dissolves in loss to CUC

Box Score

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Alverno College women's soccer team lost in a 4-1 decision to Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Conference game this evening.

The Inferno (3-6, 0-2 NAC) led 1-0 at the end of the first half after a goal by Isabel Castillo (Milwaukee, Wis./School of Languages) in the 31st minute, which was assisted by freshman Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.).

"In the first half we did a great job of sticking to our game plan," Alverno head coach Brittany Oliveira said.

The Inferno managed only three shots in the half, but limited the host Cougars (3-5, 2-2) to 10 shots and only six on goal.

"We were able to get numbers behind the ball and a lot of the shots came from distance," Oliveira said. "We battled hard to keep the ball away from our goal and the result was a good one."

Things changed for the visiting Inferno in the second half as they allowed seven shots on goal, four of which connected for a score. Alverno managed just a single shot in the second half, playing shorthanded for the second-straight game due to illness and injury.

"We played down a player again and it starts to wear on you," said Oliveira. "They got an early goal off a great cross and one of their players snuck in at the far post.  After the second goal it got really tough mentally for the team to keep pushing. But we still created some chances and threatened to score, even in the last few minutes of the game."

CUC took the lead at 2-1, just 13 minutes into the second half, scoring two more goals at the 66th and 83rd minute for the final 4-1 result.

The Inferno look to bounce back from their fourth-straight loss as they host MSOE in a NAC game this Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
