LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Alverno College women's soccer team lost 5-0 to Lake Forest College this afternoon at Farwell Field. The loss drops the Inferno below .500 for the first time this season with a 3-4 overall record.
"We are dealing with some illnesses going around which made us short-handed today," Alverno head coach Brittany Oliveira said. "We started the game with 10 and then went down to nine when Ellie (LaFond) had to come off."
The short-handed Inferno managed only five shots on goal compared to Lake Forest's 13, but were unable to come away with any goals. The host Foresters (4-3) led 3-0 at the half and were limited to two goals in the second half.
Freshman Kayla Kennedy (Trempealeau, Wis./G-E-T) made her first career start as goalkeeper recording eight saves. "Kayla has shown really good composure in the net and is picking the skills very quickly," Oliveira said. "With the transition in goal, there is a bit of a learning curve for both Kayla and all the defenders, but we're learning to play together and how to communicate better."
Alverno has all but completed their nonconference portion of the schedule with only one game remaining in the mix of its Northern Athletics Conference schedule. "We've faced a lot of adversity this season and even more today with having such a small team, but we continue to push ourselves to play the right way and to play for each other," Oliveira said.
The Inferno will play a pair of NAC games this week traveling to Concordia University Chicago on Tuesday, Sept. 22 and hosting MSOE on Saturday, Sept. 26.
"We have a really big week of NAC games ahead of us and the major focus is to get healthy so we put ourselves in the best position to get some results," Oliveira said.
Tuesday's kick-off is set for 4 p.m. and Saturday's is set for 1 p.m.
