MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College softball team dropped a pair of Northern Athletics Conference games to Rockford College, 9-4 and 7-0, on its home field on Tuesday afternoon.
As the Inferno (6-22, 4-18 NAC) held their Senior Day festivities at today's game, it was fitting that senior third baseman Andrea Spindler (Greendale) stepped up to the plate – literally. Spindler went 6-for-7 on the day with three hits in each contest and a double in the second game. Senior catcher Rebecca Schmid (Tigerton) also strung together two games of solid play on offense, scoring two runs in the first game with three hits on the afternoon.
The Inferno had a close fight on their hands during game one, establishing a 1-0 lead in the first inning that held until the Regents got on the board with three runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Alverno countered with one run at the bottom of the fifth after sophomore short stop Megan Burgess (Racine/Park) reached on a double and was later driven in by junior pitcher Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee/Greendale Martin Luther). However, Rockford answered back with six runs in the sixth inning, only two of which were earned due to an infield error, creating a deficit that was too great for the Inferno to overcome.
Goetz took the loss in the circle for the Inferno, registering six punch-outs and giving up 10 hits while also batting in two runs herself.
Rockford put the Inferno in a hole from the start of the second game, as the Regents racked up four runs in the first inning. Four Alverno miscues would later create the final three unearned runs in the game. Alverno's offense produced a healthy six hits in the second game, but was unable to string enough of them together at once to cross the plate.
Goetz also threw a complete game in the circle in the second game, giving up 12 hits with five strikeouts.
Alverno will wrap up its regular season NAC schedule with a doubleheader at Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
