MILWAUKEE -- The Alverno College softball team was unable to manage a hit as Benedictine University's pitching duo shutout the Inferno 9-0 at Alverno Field.
The Inferno (4-20, 2-16 NAC) managed to strand five runners in the game, including three in the bottom of the sixth, unable to knock in a run.
Benedictine's starting pitcher Stephanie Iori (Caron Stream, Ill.) managed to strikeout eight Inferno batters, walking only two in five scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve her record to 14-7.
Reliever Sam Corban (Plainfield, Ill.) took over in the circle for Benedictine (25-9, 15-3) in the sixth, getting into a jam due to two errors by her shortstop and loading the bases with two outs. Corban managed to have Inferno third baseman Calan Hess (Franklin, Wis.) ground out to the second baseman to end the game at 9-0 in six innings, due to the eight-run rule.
Though no Inferno managed a hit in the game, senior centerfielder Melissa Bankenbush (Franksville, Wis./Union Grove) managed to reach base three times on two walks and on an error in the sixth.
Junior right-hander Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther) recorded the decision for Alverno with two strikeouts and seven earned runs in six innings pitched, recording her school-record 21st complete game of the season (34 overall). Goetz's record drops to 4-18 on the season.
The Inferno are next in action tomorrow as they travel to River Forest, Ill. to face host Concordia University Chicago in a NAC doubleheader beginning at 4pm.
