Marian Sweeps Alverno in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The Alverno College softball team was swept by Marian University, 10-2 and 10-4, in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at Smith Fields this evening.

The Inferno (2-15, 0-11 NAC) fell behind early in both games, trailing 3-0 in both first innings.

In game one the Inferno recorded four errors in the first inning accounting for three unearned runs, and followed that up with a pair of errors in the second inning for an additional three unearned runs, to trail 6-0 after two.

Alverno would finally get on the board in the top of the fourth, recording two runs on a single hit and three walks in the inning. Freshman infielder Rosaliz David (Milwaukee, Wis./Hamilton) and sophomore outfielder Jenna Palmer (Milwaukee, Wis./Whitnall) each recorded an RBI in the inning.

That would be all the Inferno would put on the board in game one, as Marian (14-12, 10-4) would improve their lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game early.

Game two, though starting out similarly to game one, added much more excitement to the night. After trailing 4-0 at the end of three innings, the Inferno would score three runs led by a two-run homerun by sophomore shortstop Megan Burgess (Racine, Wis./Park) in the fourth. Freshman Ashley Graham (Cudahy, Wis.) recorded her first extra base hit of the season knocking in fellow rookie Calan Hess (Franklin, Wis.), narrowing Marian's lead to 4-3.

Alverno would give a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but an Andrea Spindler (Greendale, Wis.) double would send home Jessica Goetz (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale Martin Luther), cutting the lead back to one at 5-4.

That would be all the Inferno could muster, failing to put any more runs on the board, and giving up five more for the final score, 10-4.

Burgess and Spindler would lead the inferno at the plate, each hitting 2-for-5. Hess and Goetz would both also record two hits on the night, but each added an extra at bat for a 2-for-6 performance in the doubleheader.

The Inferno had 11 errors on the night, including 8 in game one, compared to host Marian's lone error.

Goetz (2-14) recorded both decisions on the night, tossing complete games in both contests. She struck out 14 batters and recorded eight earned runs.

The Inferno are next in action this Friday as they host Maranatha Baptist in a conference doubleheader at 3pm at Alverno Field.
