Box Score MILWAUKEE -- An aggressive offensive attack by the Alverno College women's soccer team yielded a 6-0 shutout victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College in Northern Athletics Conference play on Alverno's home field on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory marks the second league victory for the Inferno (5-7, 2-4 NAC) this season as well as the first time in program history Alverno has defeated Wisconsin Lutheran.
"It's nice to get two conference wins," said Alverno head coach Brittany Oliveira. "It was exciting to get that first win last week, but I think getting a win today shows the progress we're making and what this team can do."
Senior forward Ellie LaFond (Waukesha, Wis./West) wasted no time kicking off the scoring assault for the Inferno, knocking in her first goal at the 4:38 mark on a assist by senior Jackie Barnes (Germantown, Wis.). LaFond would follow that goal with two more consecutive scores for a natural hat trick, putting away one more in the first half in the 21st minute on an assist by senior Joslyn Binkowski (Greenfield, Wis.) and a solo score early in the second half in the 49th minute.
Senior midfielder Alex Brenner (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) and freshman forward Kelsey Kochanowski (Oak Creek, Wis.) continued to harass the Warriors' back line, contributing to the Inferno's unrelenting attack that produced 21 shots on goal. Brenner was successful on a pair of goals in the 64th and 83rd minutes, combining with LaFond for a smooth give-and-go on the final goal, and Kochanowski found the back of the net in the 80th minute off a rebound.
"It was awesome for us to be able to be the aggressor today," Brenner said. "In the past when we've played them it's kind of a let-down, but today was completely different for us being on the winning end and being able to show we've been making a lot of improvements."
Oliveira was also pleased with the strides her squad has made in terms of playing tough for an entire game.
"We've talked about coming out and setting the tone in games, and we were able to do that today and finish it out," Oliveira said. "We've seen that games where we are able to come out, put pressure on early and score a goal are games where we usually end up with a better result and feel better about how we played."
Oliveira also credited the Inferno's defensive stand for contributing to their offensive success in the game.
"I was impressed with our backs not only for being able to defend, but also for being the beginning of our attack today," Oliveira said. "Obviously it was great to see Ellie get her goals, and Brenner and Kelsey did a good job in the second half of stepping up, keeping possession and pushing the ball forward a little bit more. I also thought Isabel and Ellie played well up top together."
Alverno will look to continue to grow its confidence this week with a non-conference contest on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Mount Mary College, whom the Inferno defeated, 7-0, in the first game of the season.
"We played them our first game of the season and we feel like we've changed a lot since then, so I'm going to assume that they have too," Oliveira said. "It's been a few weeks since we've seen them, but hopefully we get another result like we did the first time we played them."
Brenner has also seen her squad's assurance grow, and hopes the team will continue to build upon their successes in their upcoming games.
"I think we all played really well together today," Brenner said. "We were moving well both on and off the ball as well as talking more. I think everyone is getting more and more confident in themselves and becoming more composed, especially in the back, and we just want to move forward and take that with us."
Thursday's kickoff time at Mount Mary is set for 4 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
