Box Score MILWAUKEE -- With six wins and five regular season games remaining the odds were in the favor of the Alverno College women's soccer team making history by setting the school record for wins in a season. That history came to life this evening as the Inferno set a new record with seven wins by defeating visiting Rockford College, 11-0, in a Northern Athletics Conference game at Alverno Field.
"It feels great and I'm happy for the girls," Alverno head coach Brittany Oliveira said. "It's great to accomplish one of our goals."
The Inferno (7-8, 3-5 NAC) dominated the Regents (0-8, 0-6 NAC) in the shutout victory, outshooting their opponents 43-3. Six different Alverno players scored in the game, and five assisted on the scores setting a new school record with seven assists in a game.
Senior forward Ellie LaFond (Waukesha, Wis./West) also set the individual game record with three assists.
"Ellie did a good job of setting up her teammates," Oliveira said. "Kelsey (Kochanowski) also did a good job with the ball today, getting in some good positions to finish."
Kochanowski, a freshman forward from Oak Creek, Wis., had a game-high four goals tonight, scoring all four of them in the first 19 minutes of the game.
"We've been communicating with each other a lot more and are bonding more as a team," Kochanowski said. "Since we are connecting better, it's showing on the field."
LaFond, who also recorded a pair of goals, assisted on three of Kochanowski's scores. LaFond and fellow senior Alex Brenner (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) both tallied an assist on Kochanowski's first goal of the game, and are now tied atop the Inferno record book with 12 career assists.
Kochanowski credits the defense with the team's offensive success. "The defensive line starts everything for us," said Kochanowski. "Our offense comes from working from the back up. We are also passing well with each other."
Kayla Kennedy (Trempealeau, Wis./G-E-T), Abby Halliburton (Waukesha, Wis./South), Isabel Castillo (Milwaukee, Wis./School of Languages) and Tatiana Zaldua (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) all added goals tonight, while Halliburton, Kochanowski and Joslyn Binkowski (Greenfield, Wis.) also added assists.
The 11 goals tonight brings the team's season totals to the highest they have ever been, setting season records in points (121), goals (49), and assists (23). The defense has also set a new record in team shutouts with six, surpassing the former mark of two.
"We're playing hard and organized," Oliveira said about her defense. "We've worked a lot on understanding roles and where people need to be. The team has gotten more comfortable playing with each other and communicating with each other, and that's really helping us stay organized in the back."
The Inferno, still in the hunt for one of six spots in the NAC tournament, look to add to their school record of seven victories as they travel to face NAC foe Lakeland College on Saturday at Noon.
"It's a big one," Oliveira said of Saturday's game. "It would put us at .500, which would be really, really nice. We'll be getting our minds focused so that we come out ready to go on Saturday because that's a big one for us."
The team could set one more record with a win on Saturday, as no Alverno team has ever been .500 in the month of October.
