Alverno Tops Robert Morris, 4-1, for First Victory of Season

WAUKEGAN, Ill. -- The Alverno College women's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season today, 4-1, over host Robert Morris College-Lake County.

"We really took commanding control of the ball as a team, which resulted in great offensive opportunities," said Alverno head coach Angela Zuniga-Meyer.

The Inferno (1-2) had 14 shots on goal compared to Robert Morris's 6.

Alexandria Brenner (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) led off the scoring for the game to put the Inferno ahead, 1-0. Freshman Cynthia Teschner (Union Grove, Wis.) assisted on the early first half goal.

Robert Morris responded quickly, evening the score, 1-1, but the Inferno would then rattle off three unanswered goals to end the game.

Before the end of the first half, sophomore forward Ellie LaFond (Waukesha, Wis./West) would score the go-ahead, and game winning goal which was assisted by Joslyn Binkowski (Greenfield, Wis.).

In the second half, Teschner would score on an unassisted long shot, putting the Inferno up, 3-1.

LaFond then scored her second goal of the contest, and third of the season, before the end of the game for the final score of 4-1. Brenner would assist on the final goal.

Senior Jess Kramer (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trails) led Alverno in goal, tallying five saves and allowing one goal in 90 minutes of action.

"It was an extremely physical match, and we really rose to the challenge," noted Zuniga-Meyer.

Alverno will next be in action when they host Mount Mary College next Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.
