Inferno Volleyball Unable to Match Stars' Spark

Box Score

MILWAUKEE -- Although the Alverno College women's volleyball team improved throughout its match with Dominican University, the Inferno were unable to muster enough steam to knock off the Stars, who captured the Northern Athletics Conference match win, 3-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 21, in Milwaukee, Wis.

Alverno (2-21, 0-9 NAC) crept to within a few points of Dominican (14-13, 5-4 NAC) in the third set, but ultimately the Stars' solid offense overwhelmed the home squad, 25-17, after the Inferno fell 25-13 and 25-15 in the first two sets, respectively.

"We just can't wait until the last game until we decide to start to play," said Alverno head coach Crystal McClure. "We need to have the kind of effort we showed in the third game from the beginning of the match."

Senior outside hitter Rebecca Schmid (Tigerton, Wis.) and sophomore middle blocker Robyn Rosenthal (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) led the Inferno on offense with seven kills apiece. Rosenthal was also her squad's leader in the backcourt with 10 digs followed by Schmid with nine. Junior setter Kim Reuter (Franklin, Wis.) also contributed with 14 assists.

The Inferno will continue NAC match play this weekend, travelling to Edgewood College on Friday, Oct. 24, before facing Maranatha Baptist Bible College in their final home match of the season on Saturday, Oct. 25. Match start time on Friday is set for 7 p.m. in Madison, Wis., while Saturday's home match with the Crusaders will take place at 2 p.m.
