Grinnell, IA- The Alverno College Volleyball team continued their weekend of matches in the state of Iowa on Saturday. The Inferno showed stretches of strong play, but were on the downside of matches against Central College and Grinnell College on the day.
Alverno began the day with a neutral site match against the Dutch of Central College. The Inferno were not able to sustain much momentum in the match, falling by scores of 25-14, 25-16, and 25-9.
Central compiled 44 kills to just 15 for the Inferno,
Olivia McCann (Ennis, TX) provided six kills and
Mary Needham (San Tan Valley, AZ) added 5.
The final opportunity for the Inferno to secure a win on the weekend came against the homestanding Pioneers of Grinnell College. Grinnell would take set one by a 25-14 score. Then the Inferno played their best set of the weekend, taking an exciting second set by a score of 25-20.
The positive momentum could not continue for Alverno however, as Grinnell took the last two sets at 25-14 and 25-9 to take the match.
Statistically against Grinnell,
Mary Needham played a strong all around match. She tabulated 12 kills, 3 aces and 3 blocks.
Beyonca Hereford (Beloit, WI) set her way to 14 assists and
Olivia McCann recorded six digs for the Inferno.
The Inferno will next be in action Tuesday, September 28th, this time at home against another tough opponent. Alverno will face Lake Forest College for the second time this season in a match scheduled to commence at 7 pm.
