MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Alverno College softball team traveled up to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on Tuesday afternoon, taking on the Raiders in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action. MSOE took game one in five innings, 9-1, before a close game in the nightcap went the way of the Raiders by a score of 6-3.
Sophomore
Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) and senior
Giselle Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) each had three hits on the day, with Hudson homering and doubling in game two, and Moreno adding a double in each game. Five Inferno batters had multi-hit outings in the game two loss, stranding ten runners on base in the 6-3 loss.
Alverno moves to 3-29 (1-19 NACC), while MSOE improves to 10-24 (7-13 NACC). The Inferno are next in action on Saturday, May 2, when they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran for a noon doubleheader, before wrapping up their season on Sunday, May 3, hosting Aurora.
Game One: MSOE 9, Alverno 1 (5 innings)
Alverno struck first in the opener, but MSOE responded with a big second inning to take control and secure the run-rule victory.
Alverno collected four hits in the game, as starting pitcher and sophomore
Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) was 2-2 for the Inferno, while also taking the loss in the circle with four innings of work. Moreno doubled for Alverno, while senior
Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission) was 1-2 with the lone RBI of the game.
The Inferno opened the scoring in the first inning when senior
Hailie Eschbach (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) reached on a walk, reached second base on a sacrifice, and came around to score on an RBI single from
Emily Anguiano.
MSOE answered immediately, tying the game in the bottom half before erupting for six runs in the second inning to build a 7-1 lead. The Raiders added another run in the third to extend the advantage.
From there, the Raiders starter, Katie Pollock, continued her excellent season in the circle, silencing the Inferno bats, allowing just one run on four hits and on walk while striking out eight in her complete game victory.
Offensively for MSOE, Caroline Fouras was 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Jayda Nelson doubled and drove in two runs.
Game Two: MSOE 6, Alverno 3
In game two, Alverno put together its third 12-hit performance of the season but stranded 10 runners and committed two costly errors as the Raiders used six late runs to take the doubleheader sweep.
Hudson led the offense with three hits, two RBI, and a home run, while Moreno, junior
Alyssa Hubli (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy), sophomore
Gianna Medrano (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge), and junior
Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) each had two hits. Medrano drove in a run, while Hubli reached base three times, also adding a walk.
Sophomore
Bailey Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/University of Winnipeg Collegiate) turned in one of the strongest outings of the season, going all six innings while allowing just three earned runs and striking out one, while walking none.
After three scoreless frames to start the game, the Inferno broke through in the fourth inning, as Hudson and Hubli each singled before Medrano delivered an RBI single to give Alverno a 1-0 lead.
MSOE responded in the bottom half with a two-run home run to take the lead, then added four runs in the fifth inning to create separation.
Alverno continued to battle late, scoring twice in the seventh inning, as Moreno doubled to start the rally before Hudson launched a two-run home run to cut into the deficit. A walk put the tying run on deck with two outs for the Inferno, but Kaitlyn DeNapoli was able to record the final out, earning the save.
Marissa Collazo allowed just one run in 4.2 innings to earn the win for MSOE, while Rikka Ludvigson was 2-3 with three RBI and a homer, and Lylah DeArmond and Caroline Fouras were each 2-3 with an RBI.
