ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Alverno softball team traveled to Rosemont on Sunday, playing at The Stadium at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex, also known as the Ballpark at Rosemont, against Dominican in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action. The Stars took the first game by a score of 14-3, before defeating the Inferno 11-0 in game two.
Sophomore
Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) had a two-run double in the first inning of game one, while senior
Hailie Eschbach (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and
Alyssa Hubli (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) each had hits.
The Inferno fall to 3-27 (1-17 NACC) while Dominican improved to 25-13 (19-5 NACC). Alverno is next in action on Tuesday, April 28, when they travel to Milwaukee to take on MSOE.
Game One: Dominican 14, Alverno 3 (5 innings)
The Stars used six-run innings in both the second and third to take down the Inferno, despite Alverno jumping to an early two-run lead.
Hudson had the big hit for the Inferno, as she finished the day 1-3 with two RBI and a double, with Eschbach adding the other Alverno hit while also scoring a run and walking. Senior
Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission) walked twice, scoring a run and driving in a run. Sophomore pitchers
Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) and
Riley Krider (Cromwell, Ind./West Noble) each went two innings, with Ehni taking the loss in the circle.
After a walk and a fielder's choice put two on base for Alverno in the first inning, Hudson doubled over the left fielder's head to drive in both runs and gave the Inferno an early two-run lead.
Dominican only responded with a run in the bottom of the first as Alverno held the lead through the top of the first until the Stars exploded for six runs on five hits in the second and six runs on three hits in the third. They tacked on another run in the fourth to lead 14-2 heading into the fifth.
Alverno rallied in the top of the fifth, looking to score five runs to force a bottom of the inning, but after Anguiano's RBI walk, the Stars cut down a runner at the plate after a fly ball out, ending the game.
Isabella Olmos homered and drove in five runs for Dominican, while Peyton Salfi drove in three runs in a 2-3 day. Kayla Amorino also homered for the Starts, going 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Game Two: Dominican 11, Alverno 0 (5 innings)
A couple of big innings were all the Stars needed, thanks to the effort of starting pitcher Hannah Richards, who allowed just one hit over five nearly perfect innings.
Hubli was the lone baserunner for Alverno in game two, doubling to left field with two outs in the fifth inning. Sophomore
Bailey Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/University of Winnipeg Collegiate) tossed four innings in the circle, with only six of the 11 runs scored off her being earned.
The Stars scored two runs in the first, five in the second, and four unearned runs in the fourth to get to their 11 runs while Richards held Alverno scoreless throughout.
Hubli smoked the first pitch she saw in the top of the fifth to break up Richard's perfect game, but was stranded to end the rally for Alverno.
Richards struck out two, retiring 15 of the 16 batters she faced, while Raegyn Davis, Ryley Davis, and Olmos each drove in the two runs for the Stars.
