Softball Falls to Concordia Wisconsin in Doubleheader NACC Action

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Alverno College softball team continued Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Saturday afternoon, hosting Concordia Wisconsin at Alverno Softball Field. The Inferno fell in both ends of the doubleheader, dropping game one 26-0 and game two 6-0.

Junior Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) and senior Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission) each had a hit for the Inferno, while sophomore Bailey Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/University of Winnipeg Collegiate) gave the team a strong seven innings in the circle in game two, matching her career high with four strikeouts.

Alverno moves to 3-25 (1-15 NACC) on the season, while Concordia Wisconsin improves to 21-13 (12-6 NACC). The Inferno next plays on Sunday, April 26, at Dominican in a doubleheader NACC action beginning at noon.

Game One: Concordia Wisconsin 26, Alverno 0 (5 innings)
Concordia Wisconsin used a pair of big innings to take control of the opener, including a seven-run second and a 10-run third, building a commanding lead.

Reyes accounted for Alverno's lone hit in the game, doubling in the fifth inning, while also reaching base on an HBP in her first plate appearance. The Inferno also drew two walks but were unable to generate further offense against Faith Keiper, who struck out eight over five innings.

Sophomores Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) and Riley Krider (Cromwell, Ind./West Noble) split time in the circle for Alverno, as Ehni took the loss in 2.1 innings and Krider tallied 2.2 innings.

The Falcons continued to add on in the fifth inning, finishing with 26 runs on 15 hits. Rylie DuVal and Maggie Plahmer led the offensive effort, as the pair each homered, while DuVal drove in four runs and Plahmer drove in five runs in the contest. Faith Keiper earned her eighth win by striking out eight in five one-hit innings for Concordia Wisconsin.

Game Two: Concordia Wisconsin 6, Alverno 0
In game two, Alverno kept things close early before Concordia Wisconsin pulled away late to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Anguiano recorded Alverno's lone hit in the contest, with Reyes also reaching base on an HBP. Gardner delivered a complete game effort in the circle, allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out four. She gave up just one run through her first five innings before the Falcons were able to get some late insurance in the sixth and seventh innings.

Concordia Wisconsin opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning from Jenna Shadoski, and the game remained within reach until the sixth for Alverno, when Concordia Wisconsin plated two runs, followed by a three-run home run in the seventh by Isa Bruno to extend the lead.

Emma Shellstrom gave up her first hit of the game in the seventh with two outs, going seven spectacular innings while striking out five. Bruno finished with three hits and three RBI, while Shadoski and Nora Statz were each 2-4.
