LISLE, Ill. – The Alverno College softball team traveled to take on Benedictine University in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Tuesday evening. The Inferno fell in both ends of the doubleheader, dropping game one 12-4 before an 11-1 loss in game two.
Giselle Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) led the offense, driving in three runs and collecting three hits and two doubles on the day, while senior
Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission) had two hits and an RBI. Juniors
Alyssa Hubli (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) and
Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) had a hit in each game, with Hubli collecting a double and a run scored.
Alverno moves to 3-23 (1-13 NACC) on the season, while Benedictine improves to 24-6.
Game One: Benedictine 12, Alverno 4 (5 innings)
Alverno battled early before Benedictine used big middle innings to pull away and take the opener at Heidkamp Field.
Moreno was 2-3 with three RBI in the game one loss, doubling in a run and singling in two. Reyes and sophomore
Bailey Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/University of Winnipeg Collegiate) were each 1-2 with a run scored.
The Eagles scored one run in the second to take the initial lead, and then scored three runs in both the second and third before using a five-run fifth to enact the run rule.
The Inferno got on the board in the fourth inning when Hubli singled and later scored on an RBI double from Moreno. Alverno then added three runs in the fifth inning, capitalizing on an error before Moreno delivered a two-run single to center.
Sophomore
Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) took the loss in the circle, tossing all four innings.
Haley Barnes led the way for Benedictine, going 3-3 with three runs scored, two RBI, a triple, and a double, while Lauren Bogard was 3- with three runs scored, a triple, and two RBI. Alyssa Perkins added three RBI and a double, while Mckenzie Johnson struck out 13 in a complete game win.
Game Two: Benedictine 11, Alverno 1 (5 innings)
In game two, Alverno struck first, but a big opening inning from Benedictine shifted momentum as the Eagles scored nine runs in the bottom of the first to take control.
Anguiano drove in the lone game two run, while Hubli scored the run and doubled. Moreno also added a double, while Reyes had a base hit as well for the Inferno.
The Inferno opened the scoring in the first inning when Hubli doubled and came around to score on an RBI single from Anguiano. The Eagles then responded with a nine-run inning on 10 hits, leaving two runners stranded.
Benedictine continued to add on with runs in the second and third innings, while their pitching staff limited Alverno's offense the rest of the way.
Gardner took the loss in the circle for the Inferno, tossing all four innings of work.
Taylor Oppenhuis and Lauryn Olson drove in two runs, while Morgan Bruno and Board each had two hits and two runs scored. Morgan Magnabosco earned the win with three innings of work, striking out four, while Claire Stillwell struck out five in two innings of relief.
