Softball Drops Home Doubleheader to St. Norbert

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Alverno College softball team continued Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Saturday afternoon, hosting St. Norbert College at Alverno Softball Field. The Inferno fell in both ends of the doubleheader, dropping game one 15-5 and game two 18-7.

Alverno showed offensive flashes across the two games, combining for 12 runs and 16 hits on the day, including multiple home runs and a late-game rally in the second contest. Junior Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) had three hits over the doubleheader to lead the offensive effort for the Inferno, including a double in game two. Junior Alyssa Hubli (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy), sophomore Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East), and senior Giselle Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) all had two hits across the day and homered for Alverno.

Alverno moves to 2-18 (0-8 NACC) on the season, while St. Norbert improves to 13-13 (5-5 NACC).

Game One: St. Norbert 15, Alverno 5 (5 innings)
St. Norbert used three big innings early to take control of the opener, scoring four runs in each of the first three frames before adding on late to secure the run-rule victory.

Moreno was 2-3 with a solo home run, and Hubli was 1-2 with a three-run homer and a walk. Sophomore Gianna Medrano (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) doubled and scored a run while senior Hailie Eschbach (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) drove in a run for the Inferno. Sophomore Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) recorded a complete game in the circle, tossing all five innings.

After the initial eight-run deficit, Alverno responded with a strong second inning, plating five runs on five hits to cut into the deficit. Eschbach got the scoring started with an RBI single to center before Hubli launched a three-run home run to center. Moreno followed with a solo home run, as the Inferno used back-to-back long balls to cut the deficit to just three runs.

St. Norbert answered immediately, however, scoring four runs in the third and three more in the fourth to pull away and earn the victory in five innings.

Elly Kirst was 3-3 with four RBI, four runs scored, a home run, and a walk, while Morgan Jarvi was 3-3 with three runs scored, three RBI, and two doubles. Amber Johanek earned the win in relief for the Green Knights, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings.

Game Two: St. Norbert 18, Alverno 7 (5 innings)
In game two, St. Norbert capitalized on a big third inning to complete the sweep, scoring 12 runs to build a commanding lead.

Hudson led the offense with two hits, including a homer, and three RBI, while Anguiano finished with two RBI and two runs scored. Reyes added a pair of hits, as Alverno tallied nine hits as a team in the contest. Sophomore Riley Krider (Cromwell, Ind./West Noble) took the loss in the circle, tallying 2.1 innings, while Ehni pitched the final 2.2 frames.

Alverno got on the board in the second inning when Hudson singled, and Anguiano scored on an error, but the Green Knights broke the game open in the following inning with their 12-run frame.

The Inferno continued to compete late, putting together a six-run fifth inning to nearly extend the game. Anguiano delivered a two-run single, and Hudson then homered to center field to prolong the rally. An error allowed another run to score, but the Green Knights were able to strand the bases loaded to take the win.

Johanek earned her second win of the day with three strong innings in her start in the circle, while Ava Engwall's first-inning grand slam highlighted the offensive effort for St. Norbert.
