PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Alverno College softball team continued Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Lakeland University for a doubleheader at Muskie Softball Field. The Inferno fell in both contests, dropping game one 23-9 before a 12-1 loss in game two.
Senior
Kate Peabody (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) led the offense with four RBI, while sophomore
Gianna Medrano (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) had three hits over the doubleheader, including one double. Sophomore
Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) had a hit and an RBI in each game, homering in the second game.
Alverno moves to 2-20 (0-10 NACC) on the season, while Lakeland improves to 15-10-1 (7-3 NACC).
The Inferno will celebrate their four seniors tomorrow before the start of their game against Concordia Chicago at noon, honoring
Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission),
Hailie Eschbach (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper),
Giselle Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech), and Peabody.
Game One: Lakeland 23, Alverno 9 (5 innings)
Lakeland used big innings in the second, third, and fourth to take control of the opener, building a 23-0 lead before the Inferno mounted a late rally in the fifth.
Each hitter for Alverno recorded a hit, with Peabody, Medrano, and Moreno all recording two hits and a double. Peabody drove in four runs, while Medrano was 2-2 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk. Anguiano had an RBI triple, and junior
Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz/Ironwood Ridge) scored twice with a single and a walk.
Despite the large deficit at the top of the fifth, Alverno's offense came alive in the final frame, plating nine runs on eight hits. Peabody led the surge with a pair of hits and four RBI, including a two-run double and a two-run single. With two outs in the inning, the team had seven straight batters reach to cut into the deficit before the game ended by run rule. Sophomore
Riley Krider (Cromwell, Ind./West Noble) added an RBI single in the inning, and Hudson and Medrano also drove in runs in the frame.
Krider took the loss in the circle for Alverno, going four innings in the complete game effort.
Sam Marchant hit a grand slam for the Muskies to break the game open, while Tina Brooks drove in three runs for the Lakeland offense.
Game Two: Lakeland 12, Alverno 1 (5 innings)
In game two, Lakeland again struck early, scoring four runs in the first and adding eight more in the second to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Alverno's lone run came in the second inning, when Hudson launched a solo home run to right field. Medrano doubled in the game as well, as the pair combined for the team's two hits.
Sophomore
Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) took the loss in the circle, tossing a complete game while striking out one.
Lakeland's offense was paced by Callie Linders with three hits and two RBI, while McKenzie Staudinger drove in three runs and Maddie Raske added a three-run double for the Muskies.
