Softball Travels to Edgewood for a NACC Twinbill; Falls in Doubleheader Action

VERONA, Wis. – The Alverno College softball team continued Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Verona, Wisconsin, to take on Edgewood University. The Inferno fell in both ends of the doubleheader, dropping game one 9-1 and game two 15-1.

Junior Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) drove in both runs on the day, tripling in a run in game one and driving in another with an RBI groundout in game two. Senior Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission) scored both runs, tallying two hits and also reaching base on an HBP.

Alverno falls to 0-14 (0-4 NACC) with the losses, while Edgewood improves to 9-8 (2-0 NACC) with the wins. The Inferno will return to action in their home opener tomorrow, March 29, taking on Rockford in a NACC doubleheader beginning at noon.

Game One: Edgewood 9, Alverno 1 (5 innings)
A three-run first inning and a five-run bottom of the fourth helped give the Eagles their first win of the day, as their offense used timely hitting to take game one.

For the Inferno, Anguiano reached twice and scored a run while Reyes drove in her teammate with an RBI triple in the second inning. Senior Hailie Eschbach (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) reached base twice with a single and a walk.
Sophomore Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wis./Monroe) took the loss in the circle despite a strong effort early on, earning another complete game.

Two errors in the first helped Edgewood take the early 3-0 lead, but Anguiano responded with a leadoff single in the following half-inning, and Reyes tripled to left center to bring her in, just the second extra-base hit of her career, with the first also being a triple.

Edgewood added another run in the third to take a 4-1 lead, where the score remained until their five-run fourth, as they were able to take advantage of four walks before a line drive resulted in an inning-ending double play. Senior Kate Peabody (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) singled with one out in the fifth for Alverno, but the Inferno could not bring her around, as the game ended in five innings.

Lauren Prigge earned her fifth win of the season for the Eagles, going five innings and allowing just one run, while also striking out six. Grace Dooley drove in three runs and had two hits, while Lily Mabs also had two hits and drove in two runs.

Game Two: Edgewood 15, Alverno 1 (5 innings)
In game two, Edgewood used a nine-run second and two runs in every other inning to take the doubleheader.

Anguiano once again had a base-hit and scored a run, with Reyes driving her in. Eschbach had another base-hit while sophomore Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) walked and doubled.

Sophomore Riley Krider (Cromwell, Ind./West Noble) took the loss in the circle, while Ehni went three innings in relief.

Edgewood tacked on two runs early and built a strong cushion with a nine-run bottom of the second. They added two runs in the third and fourth to build their lead.

The Inferno were able to get a run across in the fourth inning after an Anguiano single, and Hudson's double put two runners in scoring position. Reyes was able to drive in Anguiano for the second time on the day, grounding out to bring home the senior. In the fifth, Alverno was retired in order to end the doubleheader matchup.

Hailie Boardman earned the win for the Eagles with three innings in the circle, allowing one run. Lily Mabs and Mackenzie Miller each homered, with Miller driving in four runs in the final game of the day.
