KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Alverno College softball team continued its spring trip in Kissimmee, Florida on Monday, dropping a pair of non-conference matchups. Endicott College defeated the Inferno 12-7 in the opening game of the day, while UMass Dartmouth followed with a 16-0 victory in the second contest.
Sophomore
Nadya Hudson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) continued her strong start to the season at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the opener against Endicott. Sophomore
Gianna Medrano (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) also had a strong outing in game one, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, collecting the team's lone hit in game two as well. Junior
Alyssa Hubli (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) added two hits and drove in a run in game one, while
Bailey Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/University of Winnipeg Collegiate) and
Giselle Moreno (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) each had two hits.
With the losses, the Inferno moves to 0-6 on the season, while Endicott improves to 2-3 and UMass Dartmouth improves to 5-1.
Game One: Endicott 12, Alverno 7
The Inferno offense produced one of its strongest offensive outings of the young season in game one, recording 14 hits, but a six-run second inning from Endicott proved to be the difference as the Gulls earned a 12-7 victory.
After a scoreless opening inning, Alverno struck first in the second when freshman
Mac Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/College Churchill) brought home the game's first run with an RBI sacrifice bunt, giving the Inferno an early 1-0 lead.
Endicott answered in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, plating six runs to take control of the contest.
Alverno continued to battle back offensively, scoring two runs in the third inning behind a steal of home from Hubli and an RBI single from Medrano. The Gulls responded with a two-run third as well, extending their lead back to five runs.
The Inferno added single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to remain within striking distance, as Hubli had an RBI single and
Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission) also drove in a run.
The offense kept applying pressure in the sixth inning, when the Inferno pushed across two more runs to bring the score to 8-7 as Medrano had a two-run single to right center, putting the tying run on third before Endicott ended the threat.
The Gulls went on to score four runs in the bottom half of the inning, pulling away for the 12-7 win.
Bailey Gardner took the loss in the circle for the Inferno, pitching all six innings to earn her first complete game of the season while striking out two.
Abby McClafin led the Endicott offense with three hits and two runs score, while Mia Mitchell drove in four runs for the Gulls. Alexa Gillis earned the win in the circle with four innings of work, while Analise Grady picked up the save with 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.
Game Two: UMass Dartmouth 16, Alverno 0 (5 innings)
In the second game of the day, UMass Dartmouth used early offensive momentum to secure a 16-0 win in five innings.
The Corsairs struck for three runs in the opening inning before adding three more in the second and four in the third to take control of the contest, leading 10-0 before the Inferno even had their third chance at the plate.
UMass Dartmouth continued to apply pressure at the plate, adding six runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead and bring the game to its final score.
Medrano recorded the lone hit for the Inferno in the contest, while Hubli and
Bailey Gardner each reached base via walks.
Sophomore
Riley Krider (Cromwell, Ind./West Noble) and sophomore
Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) split time in the circle for Alverno in the loss, with Krider being the pitcher of record for the Inferno.
Lily Routhier earned the win for the Corsairs, pitching three scoreless frames, while Aubry Mabrouk threw two scoreless innings as well. Lena Tsonis drove in four runs for UMass Dartmouth, while Emma Talpey drove in three.
