Softball Falls in Non-Conference Split Doubleheader on Wednesday

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Alverno College softball team continued play at THE Spring Games and the Fortune Road Complex on Wednesday, dropping a pair of non-conference contests. The University of Southern Maine earned an 8-0 victory in game one, while Rutgers-Camden took the second game of the day by a 10-3 final.

Sophomore Gianna Medrano (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) and senior Emily Anguiano (South El Monte, Calif./San Gabriel Mission) led the way offensively for the Inferno on the day, each collecting two hits and an RBI in game two. Anguiano also added a double while junior Alyssa Hubli (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

With the losses, the Inferno move to 0-8 on the season, while Southern Maine improves to 4-2 and Rutgers-Camden improves to 5-5.

Game One: Southern Maine 8, Alverno 0 (5 innings)
Southern Maine used an early offensive push to secure an 8-0 win in five innings in the opening game of the day for the Inferno.

Junior Jaycee Reyes (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) and freshman Mac Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/College Churchill) each had a base-hit for Alverno in the setback.

The Huskies struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added four more in the third to build an early advantage. Southern Maine was able to add an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, to end the game on a run-rule walkoff.

Bailey Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, Ontario/University of Winnipeg Collegiate) took the loss in the circle, pitching 4.2 innings for the Inferno.

For Southern Maine, Mia Coots earned the complete game victory with five strong innings of two-hit ball, striking out five. Mackenzie Reimer and Emma Ingalls led the offense, each going 3-3 with an RBI.

Game Two: Rutgers-Camden 10, Alverno 3
In the second game of the day, Alverno gave a resilient effort after an early deficit, but Rutgers-Camden pulled away late to secure a 10-3 victory.

Medrano and Anguiano each had two hits in the game, driving in a run apiece, while Medrano added a run scored. Hubli also scored a run and had a base-hit, with the other hit on the day coming from senior Kate Peabody (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore).

The Scarlett Raptors took early control of the game with a seven run second inning on just three hits.

The Inferno eventually responded in the fourth inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to score three runs. Hubli lead off the inning reaching on an error, and after Moreno was hit by a pitch, Medrano soon followed by driving in a run with an RBI single, with another scoring on an errant throw. Anguiano followed with an RBI double to deep right field, as Alverno cut the deficit to 7-3.

Alverno continued to put runners on base throughout the middle innings but they were unable to push across additional runs, and Rutgers-Camden added three insurance runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead and seal the win.

Sophomore Cece Ehni (Snohomish, Wash./Monroe) took the loss in the circle, while sophomore Riley Krider (Cromwell, Ind./West Noble) logged 2.1 scoreless innings and Bailey Gardner worked three innings of relief.

Sammie Friel earned the complete game win for the Scarlett Raptors, allowing no earned runs on six hits, striking out six batters.  The top of the Rutgers-Camden order was fantastic, as Ava Iepson drove in two runs, Gianna Bauer had two hits and two RBI, and Kali Baker drove in two runs, while Alana Gannon led the team with three runs driven in on two base-hits.
